About the Material
Venetian plaster (known in Italian as intonaco veneziano) is a decorative lime plaster originating in Venice during the Renaissance. It is made from slaked lime putty and fine marble dust, mixed with natural pigments to achieve custom colour.
Unlike paint, which sits as a film on top of the wall, Venetian plaster is built up in thin, overlapping layers that are hand-burnished with a steel trowel. The burnishing action compresses the surface, creating its distinctive luminous depth, a three-dimensional quality that shifts with the light throughout the day.
